Dealing with Condensation (damp and mould)

When surfaces appear cold and wet, it is likely that condensation is the cause. There might be places where walls appear damp, this is due to moisture. Look for areas on your wall with clouds of little black spots, in most cases, this is mould caused by condensation.

Things to consider

Open your window trickle vents during the day or when you're away. Aim to keep windows open for at least 15 minutes every day.

Avoid placing furniture against external walls. Try to leave space between the furniture and the wall to improve airflow.

While cooking, showering, or bathing, close internal doors, open the windows, and use extractor fans if you have them. Afterward, leave the windows open and let the extractor fans run for about 20 minutes to clear excess steam.

Use a cloth or squeegee to wipe down windows, mirrors, tiles, and shower doors to remove any moisture.

When cooking, keep lids on pans to reduce steam and save energy.

Only boil the amount of water you need in the kettle to minimize steam and save money.

Take shorter, cooler showers to minimize steam production.

When filling a bath, add cold water first to reduce steam and condensation.

Avoid drying wet clothes on radiators as this forces your boiler to work harder, costing as much as running a tumble dryer and increasing condensation.

If drying clothes indoors, use a drying rack in a room where you can open the window slightly and keep the door shut. A dehumidifier can help too. Did you know drying clothes indoors can add 10- 15 litres of moisture to your home every week?

Avoid using bottled gas or LPG heaters, as they release a lot of moisture into the air.
